A new federal law will let you place free credit freezes plus extended fraud alerts on your credit report. The law takes effect September 21 and includes:
- Free credit freezes so it’s harder for identity thieves to open accounts in your name.
- Free child credit freezes so you can freeze a credit file until the child is old enough to use credit.
- Year-long fraud alerts so any business that runs your credit has to check with you before opening an account.
